清水小学校は1932年に京都の番組小学校として約90年の歴史をもっています。番組小学校とは、京都の町衆たちの住民自治組織であった「番組（町組）」が創設され、彼らの寄付などによって作られた小学校です。2011年に閉校し、数年後にホテルへとコンバージョンすることとなりました。全体のディレクションはA・N・D小坂竜氏によって統括され、私達は建築のデザイン監修を担当させていただきました。また、この場所は緑豊かな東山の山の斜面に位置し、周辺は京都でも特に歴史的な町家や寺社仏閣に囲まれています。既存の小学校の校舎は贅沢な作りであり、当時は殆どが木造だった時代に最新の洋風建築様式のRC造でした。この部分はできる限り修復、保存し、拡張が必要な増築部分を如何に作るのかが課題となりました。過去90年の以上の歴史とこれから90年以上の未来を見据えたとき、この建築が刻んでいた風景と、これから刻んでいく風景が繋がっていくことが最も重要なことだと考えました。そこで私達は増築部分は既存の建築に対して（街に対しても）「黒子」に徹し続け、東山の緑とランドスケープとして一体になっていくように考えました。エントランスアプローチからは八坂の塔が隠れないように増築部分を低く抑え、既存の建築を覆い隠さない様に何度もシュミレーションを行いとても慎重に計画されています。

The Hotel Seiryu was formerly an elementary school named Kiyomizu, established in 1932 in Kyoto. With over 90 years of history, this elementary school was funded by donations from an autonomous administrative unit composed of local residents. Though the school was closed in 2011, the building itself carries a lot of good memories of the old days.
A few years after closure, the school was converted into a hotel featuring spacious Japanese zen gardens, rooftop bar with an aerial view of the city, and 48 guest rooms transformed from old classrooms. The hotel lobby intends to create a calming and welcoming atmosphere where guests can relax and start the day off. The overall design scheme was created by Mr. Ryu Kosaka from AND while FHAMS were in charge of the design supervision.
The Hotel Seiryu is located on the slope of the Higashiyama mountain and surrounded by a number of historical townhouses and traditional Buddhist temples unique to Kyoto. The building was finished minimally with reinforced concrete structure, which was quite advanced and luxury at that time, compared to most other buildings with wooden structure.
One of the premises of this project is to preserve and repair the existing building while maintaining an historical link with the surroundings. The renovation plan looks into the past 90 years and the upcoming 90 years – considering connecting the landscape carved in the past while planning to integrate the building with the future scenery. One notable challenge that the architects faced was to make sure the new constructions are relatively low, so that the visitors’ first glance is nothing but the beautiful Yasaka Pagoda. This result was achieved through numerous simulation experiments and discreet planning.
